med school mumblings...

someone remarked that there are four seasons in our lecture theatre - those in front are experiencing autumn and winter while those behind are enjoying the spring and summer. mc walked in the other day for just one minute and when he emerged from the lt his glasses were all misted over. so my toes cyanose every day and mr m comes in two jackets or a fleece one and even my seniors ask me about the ice box we call lt 28, but i think i should stop harping on it and enjoy the winter.

went to chinese high last week to borrow costumes for playhouse. believe it or not, i've never been to chinese high/ hwa chong, and i must say the buildings look quite impressive. they've got lots of land and nice ponds and man-made streams. if only my alma mater had that. anyway, due to the varied roles and sizes of the actors, i really hope those costumes we got are suitable. no sewing machines please!

exams are in a month's time. oooh. i'm getting distracted by so many things, and it isn't because i've got too little time.

many thanks to spacefan for the prop!

it's been a real interesting week since my birthday. i had a nice long weekend because of smec, but which i blew by going online and watching tv and day dreaming instead of concentrating on my books. the conscientious girl that i was, i dutifully did my cofm tutorial, only to find on wednesday that it would be postponed till two weeks' later. so not only were the hours spent the night before trying to understand this crazy hypertension study gone to waste, but the lot of us suddenly found ourselves with nearly four hours to spare. not surprisingly, my tut group (js, rod and greg) went over to holland road to have xo sliced fish soup. whoot. seven dollars for one bowl, but it was certainly and experience.

the next day, a larger group of us went to ikea for lunch (another ten bucks blown on roast beef and meatballs) before going to ah for pbl. and because our tutor was a good-looking lady surgeon several guys turned up just to be in her presence. but as they say, it takes all sorts to form the world, and at least one guy in the group nodded off. she did an endoscopy on rod (we saw his choncha, an event which excites only medical students) who gamely allowed us to take pictures of him with that black thing up his nostrils.

friday the class com celebrated maf and the september birthdays. someone brought lots of lightstick bangles and this amused prof t.m. quite a bit. everyone had a slice of mooncake while i had a slice of cheesecake. not bad, and our class went a little crazy and childish, waving all the bangles and squealing when the lights went out.

to end off the week i went back to my alma mater for an alumni gathering. quite all right, save for the fact that it started one hour late and there was no more food left after an ex english teacher had finished preaching to us. oh well.

and it's an off day for me today. caught the emmy's live, and was saddened to hear the passing of dana elcar whom i used to watch a lot on macgyver. i'm glad felicity huffman and jon stewart won in their respective categories; they're really good in their craft.

if only...

thanks to someone's complaints, the temperature in the lecture theatre was lowered considerably today. those who chose a more "singaporean" way of dressing (sleeveless, three-quarters/skirt and slippers) instantly froze. people were buying hot drinks to warm their hands and i could see the steam clearly rising from the drink. so a million thanks to those who said the lt was too hot, too stuffy. we've now officially entered the ice age.

a respected local newspaper recently scared the -toot- out of me by giving this definition of conjunctivitis: "as its name suggests, the condition is caused by a virus." i was like, where's mama robbins?! have i forgotten the definition of conjunctivitis? turns out i was all right, the suffix -itis does not refer to a viral infection, but to an inflammation, which any good student of pathology knows, is not necessarily caused by an infection. so there, yet another piece of misinformation available to the gullible public, who could be expected to bang on doctors' doors and demand miracle cures.

went to see the perfect catch with hweech, fish and nimi. funny show, with a huge baseball theme, so i don't think any of us really appreciated the world series rant. drew barrymore scores yet another hit, though she looks a tad older and more gaunt. good, rather clean fun, with a predictable plot and imho, poor editing. however this is a good flick to watch with girlfriends and gush over the goofy, good-looking guy who'll scrub your toilet on your first date. cheers to the house boy.

first things first, i've come across a pretty interesting blog done by a local doctor. he says his blog is fictional, but there has to be some truth in any fiction, so it makes for a pretty good read.

second, i'm thoroughly broke after spending nine bucks at genki sushi today for lunch. and i can't believe that four hours later i started to feel hungry while the guys didn't. but fun, rod, greg and i had an interesting conversation, and rod came out with yet another wise saying, which is that a dian deng pao is like a chilli between two pieces of chocolate.

third, salto-tellez is a really funny guy. he would ask us questions and after we answered he would say something like, "that's a very good answer to write in your book...and then rub away because it's wrong!" he made us do presentations on the pots too. very relaxed and hilarious, wonder why someone said he's very scary because he "arrows" people.

fourth, that i should be going through my backlog of pharmacokinetics notes but i would like to slip a word in that medical students are not the worst dressed and we don't buy our clothes from the pasar malam, thank you very much, mr so-cio-lo-gy honours student. it created a stir today, and someone stuck a photocopy of the article on the whiteboard for everyone to see. certain mean comments were made about this particular student (it isn't hard to think along those lines, but i shan't reproduce them here for fear of retaliation) and i find it strange that he should be so familiar with the dressings of medical students because imho, the dentistry people are the best dressed, simply because their profs encourage them. in addition, i wonder if he ever had the chance to sit in and have a look during our lectures, since we have no cross-fac modules to speak of. i think he would be astonished that we have quite a number of people who dress pretty well and that the rest of us are fairly decent. certainly if you want the latest fashions, why be in nus at all, hop over to smu where the culture is all dress up. so, for all the sociology he has done, i wonder if he has done any "honors" research on fashion and a certain type of grape.
